Fire Science Academy Welcomes
New University Provost

FSA Welcomes New Provost

On Tuesday, July 8, 2008, the Fire Science Academy welcomed the new Un
iversity Executive Vice President and Provost, Marc Johnson, Ph.D., and Karen Johnson to the Carlin campus. Dr. Johnson joined UNR on June 1st from Colorado State University where he was dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences. At UNR, Dr. Johnson oversees the University's academic and outreach programming, which includes the University's eight degree-granting colleges, extended studies programs and University of Nevada Cooperative Extension.

FSA Welcomes New Provost

While on campus, Provost Johnson met the management team of the Fire Science Academy and received a facility tour from Executive Director Denise Baclawski. A demonstration burn highlighting the recent updates to the Pipe Chase/Horizontal Storage Tank industrial fire prop was also conducted.

Pipe Chase/Horizontal Storage Tank Ready For New Challenges
To meet the growing demands of our clientele for more advanced fire scenarios, the Fire Science Academy recently completed updates to the Pipe Chase/Horizontal Storage Tank prop. Additional burn points have been added, creating an even more challenging maneuver problem for multiple hose teams. The prop includes a large tank and pipe chase. The horizontal tank allows students to practice exposure protection in conjunction with fire fighting efforts. The pipe chase can also be used for training in combination attacks using water and dry chemical agents together to control a large pressurized flange fire.

FSA Financial Sustainability:
A Message from the Director

Prompted in part by a serious shortfall in the Nevada state budget, a Citizens Advisory Group has completed a comprehensive review of the academy's operating and financial status. The review found a well-operated facility with a strong safety record and cutting-edge programs. The financial picture, unfortunately, is not as positive. University of Nevada, Reno President Milt Glick will present the details of the review during the August meeting of the Nevada Board of Regents. To learn more, click here for a letter from Executive Director Denise Baclawski to FSA clients and friends.
